The Battle Within #4:
Martha

A Biblical Answer to Anxiety, Panic, and Depression

Luke 10:38-42 | Pastor Winston Parrish

Martha welcomes Jesus into her home with a sincere desire to honor and serve Him. Yet as the responsibilities multiply, her attention shifts from the Savior in her home to the work demanding her hands. Martha becomes so consumed with caring for everyone else that she neglects the care of her own soul. Good and necessary responsibilities can still draw us away from Christ when service replaces worship and the “many things” become more important than the one thing needful.

Jesus does not respond to Martha’s frustration with anger or condemnation. He tenderly calls her by name, looks beyond the work to the overwhelmed woman carrying it, and redirects her to His Word. Christ is not another demand upon an already depleted life; He is the source of the grace, peace, and truth needed to live it. The responsibilities may remain, but they do not have to become our lord. We sit at Jesus’ feet because the people who need us most also need us to be strengthened, steadied, and governed by Him.

1. Service Stole Her Attention

Martha was doing something good for Jesus, but her service had displaced her fellowship with Jesus. Our work cannot remain spiritually healthy when we continually give Christ only what is left after everyone else has taken what they need.

2. Anxiety Distorted Her Affection

Under pressure, Martha began resenting her sister and questioning whether Jesus cared about her. Anxiety can distort how we see God and the people we love, but Christ invites us to bring Him our honest frustration and receive His tender correction.

3. Worship Restored Her Direction

Before Martha needed another pair of hands, she needed to hear the voice of her Lord. Putting Christ first does not erase our responsibilities; it places them under the authority of His Word and gives us the grace to carry them without starving our souls.
