The Discipleship of the Family
Week 7 | Titus 1 | Pastor Winston Parrish
The family is one of God’s primary instruments for passing truth from one generation to the next. Parenting is presented as far more than providing for physical needs or preparing children for adulthood; it is the lifelong work of discipleship. Children are entrusted to parents as a gift from God and are to be intentionally taught His Word, His character, and His ways. The ultimate goal is not simply raising well-behaved or successful children, but raising young men and women who know Christ, love truth, and are prepared to stand before God.
Every home is being shaped by something, and Scripture calls families to be intentionally shaped by truth. Parents are entrusted with the responsibility of establishing a home where Christ is Lord, the Bible is the final authority, and truth is woven into the everyday rhythms of life. As the world continually presses against God’s design, families are called to guard against deception, shape the hearts of their children through biblical discipleship, and point them consistently to Christ. While only God can save a soul, the home remains one of His primary means of preparing the next generation to walk in truth and remain faithful to Him.
1. Set the Home — Titus 1:5
A godly home is established by the authority of Christ and the truth of Scripture rather than the values of culture. Parents are called to create an environment where God’s Word shapes the priorities and direction of family life.
2. Shape the Heart — Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Biblical parenting goes beyond correcting behavior and seeks to shepherd the heart toward truth and faith in Christ. The ultimate goal is to raise children who know God and walk in His ways.
3. Stop the Lies — Titus 1:10-14
Parents must actively guard their homes against influences that oppose God’s truth and seek to shape the next generation. Discipleship requires both exposing deception and consistently pointing children to Christ.
