The Foundation of the Family
Week 1 | A Selection of Scriptures | Pastor Winston Parrish
The foundation of the family is not determined by culture, preference, or human reasoning, but by the design and authority of God. In a time when the family is being redefined and weakened, Scripture calls attention back to its origin in creation, where God intentionally established marriage and the home. The family is not a social construct or evolving institution—it is a divine institution, formed by God with purpose, dignity, and design. Any attempt to redefine or reshape the family apart from God’s Word leads to instability and disorder.
Beyond its origin, the family is structured and sustained by God’s order and authority. Marriage is established as a covenant union between a man and a woman, designed with distinction, responsibility, and unity. Within the home, God has given clear roles and spiritual oversight, not as restriction but as protection and wisdom. A family functions rightly only when it is governed by the rule of God, with hearts surrendered to His authority. The strength of the home is ultimately determined not by outward appearance, but by whether it is built upon and submitted to the foundation God has laid.
1. The Origin of the Family
The family was created by God, not culture, and therefore carries His authority and design. Because it belongs to Him, it is not subject to human redefinition.
2. The Order of the Family
God established a clear structure for the home, including roles, distinction, and covenant unity, to bring stability and protection. True order is not restrictive, but the framework through which the family thrives.
3. The Oversight of the Family
The home must be governed by the authority of God, not personal preference or cultural influence. A family stands firm only when every member lives in submission to His rule.
