The Gospel For the One
Luke 15:1-10 | Pastor Nathan Hawkins
Jesus’ parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin demonstrate the individual worth of every person to God. Although society often measures success by the size of a crowd, Jesus directs attention to the one who is lost. The shepherd’s search for the sheep and the woman’s diligent search for the coin illustrate God’s intentional pursuit of sinners and show that a person’s value is established by the One who seeks them.
The passage also challenges believers to look beyond social, religious, and cultural labels. Jesus sought people from every background, including Zacchaeus, Nicodemus, and the Samaritan woman, offering each the same call to repent and believe. When one sinner is saved, Heaven rejoices, and that transformed life can influence a family, a church, and an entire community.
1. The Importance of the One
The determined searches for the lost sheep and the lost coin reveal how deeply God values each person. Salvation begins with God’s purposeful pursuit of the lost, often accomplished through the faithful witness, prayers, teaching, and compassion of others.
2. The Insignificance of the Crowd
Jesus addressed a diverse crowd but looked beyond its labels to recognize the spiritual need of each individual. His ministry demonstrates that no social position, religious identity, or sinful past places a person beyond the reach of the gospel.
3. The Impact When They’re Found
The recovery of one lost sinner produces rejoicing on Earth and in Heaven. One transformed life may appear insignificant by human measurements, but its influence can extend into families, churches, and communities.
