The Mother That God Builds
Week 4 | I Samuel 1:1-28 | Pastor Winston Parrish
Motherhood is presented in Scripture not as a secondary role or cultural expectation, but as a holy calling established and honored by God. In a world that continually redefines womanhood and minimizes the value of the home, 1 Samuel 1 points back to the eternal significance of a godly mother. Through the life of Hannah, the passage reveals that the greatest influence in a child’s life is often not found on a platform, but in the daily faithfulness, prayers, sacrifice, and spiritual consistency of a mother who walks with God. Before Samuel was ever used publicly by God, Hannah was being shaped privately through pain, sorrow, and dependence upon the Lord.
Hannah’s story demonstrates that God often builds deep spiritual strength through seasons of disappointment and unanswered longing. Though marked by grief and provocation, Hannah refused to allow pain to make her bitter or destructive. Instead, she continually brought her burdens before the Lord, trusting Him even when circumstances remained unchanged. When God answered her prayer with the gift of Samuel, Hannah recognized that her child ultimately belonged to God. The passage presents motherhood as stewardship, reminding believers that the goal is not merely to raise successful children, but children who know the Lord and are surrendered to His purposes.
1. She Carries Pain Without Poisoning Her Home — I Samuel 1:1-2
Though Hannah carried deep sorrow and prolonged disappointment, she refused to allow bitterness to control her spirit or destroy those around her. God’s grace enabled her to endure pain without abandoning worship, faithfulness, or trust in the Lord.
2. She Pours Out Her Soul Before the Lord — I Samuel 1:3
Rather than turning away from God in her grief, Hannah continually brought her burdens before Him in honest and persistent prayer. Her faith was revealed not by the absence of sorrow, but by her willingness to trust God with a broken heart.
3. She Puts Her Children in God’s Hands — I Samuel 1:19-20
Hannah understood that children are ultimately gifts entrusted by God and are to be raised for His glory rather than personal fulfillment. Her willingness to dedicate Samuel back to the Lord demonstrates that biblical motherhood is rooted in stewardship, surrender, and eternal purpose.
