The Legacy of the Family

Week 3 | Joshua 24:1-15 | Pastor Nathan Hawkins

Every family has the responsibility to leave behind a legacy of faith that points future generations toward the Lord. In Joshua’s final address to the children of Israel, he called them to remember the faithfulness of God throughout their history—from deliverance out of Egypt to finally dwelling in the Promised Land. Every blessing they enjoyed was the result of God’s providence, grace, and guidance. Life is brief, but the impact of a faithful life can continue long after someone is gone, making legacy not about possessions or success, but about spiritual influence and obedience to God.

Joshua reminded the people that they were living in cities they did not build and eating from vineyards they did not plant, pointing to the sacrifices and faithfulness of previous generations. That same challenge was extended forward: just as others had protected the future for them, they now had the responsibility to protect it for those coming behind them. Families were called to fear God, serve Him sincerely, reject idols, and intentionally choose obedience in their homes. Joshua’s declaration, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” served as a call for every believer to make a personal decision to build a legacy of faithfulness that would continue echoing through future generations.

1. Remember the Past
Joshua reminded the people of God’s faithfulness throughout their history and how every blessing they had came from His hand.

2. Be Grateful For the Present
The people were living in blessings from the faithfulness of previous generations, challenging them to recognize the goodness of God in the present.

3. Protect the Future
Joshua called the people to intentionally choose faithfulness for the generations coming behind them. By fearing God, serving Him sincerely, and rejecting idols, they could leave a lasting legacy that honored the Lord.
