The Warfare of the Family

Week 8 | I Sam. 7:3-13 | Eph. 6:12 | Pastor Winston Parrish

The family is one of God’s greatest institutions, which is why it’s a primary target of spiritual warfare. Israel’s struggle in I Samuel 7 reveals that victory over external enemies begins with dealing honestly with internal compromise. Before God delivered His people from the Philistines, He called them to remove the idols they had allowed into their lives. Spiritual strength in the home is not found in better circumstances, but in wholehearted surrender to God and a willingness to let Him cleanse what doesn’t belong.

As Israel turned back to the Lord, they gathered in repentance, prayer, and dependence upon Him. When the Philistines came against them, God intervened and fought the battle they could not win themselves. Samuel’s Ebenezer stone stood as a reminder that every victory came from the Lord’s help and mercy. Homes that experience God’s work must continue standing on the ground He has given them, refusing to return to the compromises and sins that once weakened them.

1. Clean House — I Samuel 7:3-4
Victory over the enemy begins by removing the idols and compromises that have been allowed into the heart and home. God calls His people to return to Him completely, not simply manage the things pulling them away from Him.

2. Cry Out — I Samuel 7:5-6
Real change begins when God’s people stop making excuses and seek Him through confession, prayer, and dependence. Spiritual battles cannot be won through human effort but through the strength and power of God.

3. Claim Ground — I Samuel 7:10
God’s victories should be remembered and protected. Just as Samuel raised an Ebenezer stone to mark God’s faithfulness, families should stand firmly on what God has done and refuse to surrender the ground He has helped them gain.
