The Covenant of the Family
Week 5 | Ephesians 5:22-33 | Pastor Winston Parrish
Marriage is presented in Scripture not as a cultural arrangement or temporary contract, but as a sacred covenant established and governed by God. Ephesians 5 reveals that the home cannot function according to God’s design apart from the work of the Holy Spirit and submission to biblical truth. At the center of the family is the covenant of marriage, where a husband and wife are joined together by God for His glory. Marriage is not ultimately built upon personal happiness, convenience, or self-fulfillment, but upon covenant faithfulness that reflects the relationship between Christ and His church.
Within this covenant, God establishes both order and responsibility. Wives are called to honor God through joyful submission to His design, while husbands are commanded to love sacrificially after the pattern of Christ Himself. The passage reveals that biblical marriage is not about power, pride, or control, but about humility, sacrifice, holiness, and grace. Every Christian marriage serves as a visible testimony of the gospel, displaying covenant love, forgiveness, faithfulness, and the transforming power of Christ to the world around it.
1. Covenant Honor — Ephesians 5:22-23
Biblical submission is not rooted in inferiority, but in honoring the order and authority God established within the home. A godly marriage functions rightly when both husband and wife willingly submit themselves to Christ.
2. Covenant Love — Ephesians 5:25
Husbands are called to love sacrificially after the example of Christ, laying down pride, selfishness, and passivity to nourish and cherish their wives. Biblical headship is not domination, but Christlike service and responsibility.
3. Covenant Witness — Ephesians 5:31-32
Marriage is designed to reflect the relationship between Christ and His church, making every Christian home a visible testimony of the gospel. The way a husband and wife love, forgive, and remain faithful preaches a message about the covenant-keeping character of God.
