The Temptation of the Son of Man
Week 7 | Matthew 4:1-11 | Pastor Winston Parrish
Immediately following Christ’s baptism and Heaven’s public declaration of His Sonship, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. This moment reveals that spiritual victory does not eliminate spiritual warfare—battle often follows blessing, and temptation frequently comes “afterward,” when strength is drained and vulnerability is exposed. The wilderness becomes a proving ground where God not only declares who His Son is, but demonstrates it under pressure, isolation, and suffering. The Christian life is shown to be a continual conflict where victory and warfare collide on the same battlefield.
The temptation of Christ also displays the real humanity of Jesus, who experiences genuine hunger, weakness, and spiritual assault, yet remains without sin. Satan attacks identity, trust, and obedience through three targeted temptations, offering satisfaction without submission, glory without humility, and a crown without a cross. Each time, Christ answers with the Word of God, refusing to negotiate with temptation and standing firm in the power of the Spirit. This passage reveals that victory is not achieved through willpower but through submission to God, dependence upon Christ, and truth spoken with authority.
1. The Timing of Temptation — Satan Loves “Afterward”
Temptation often comes after spiritual victory, striking when the believer is tired, vulnerable, and least guarded.
2. The Humanity of Temptation — The Son of Man in the Wilderness
Jesus faced real temptation as the Son of Man, yet remained sinless, proving He understands human weakness and can strengthen His people.
3. The Hooks of Temptation — The Same Bait in Three Forms
Satan offers shortcuts that bypass submission and lead to bondage, weakening trust in God’s Word and undermining identity in God’s truth.
A. Stones to Bread: The Lust of the Flesh — Matthew 4:3-4
B. The Pinnacle Leap: The Pride of Life — Matthew 4:5-7
C. The Kingdom’s Shortcut: The Lust of the Eyes — Matthew 4:8-9
4. The Method of Victory Over Temptation — “It Is Written”
Christ defeated temptation through submission to God and the authority of Scripture, answering every lie with God’s Word.
