The Pulpit of Power and
the Pen of Declaration
A Selection of Scripture | Pastor Winston Parrish
America’s founding was shaped by far more than political ideals or a desire for independence. Long before the Declaration of Independence was signed, faithful pastors were proclaiming biblical truths that established the moral foundation of the colonies. Their preaching reminded the people that God alone is the source of law, liberty, authority, and providence, and that every nation flourishes only when it recognizes His sovereign rule.
Four influential sermons helped prepare the hearts and consciences of the American people during the years leading up to the Revolution. Each declared a timeless biblical principle that remains just as relevant today: God’s law stands above every human authority, true liberty is a gift from God, civil government is accountable to the Lord, and history unfolds under His sovereign providence. These enduring truths call both the church and the nation to humble dependence upon God rather than confidence in human wisdom or power.
1. Abraham Williams – The Law of God
God’s moral law stands above every earthly government, ruler, and court. Human authority is accountable to the Lord and must never replace His unchanging standard of truth.
2. Simeon Howard – God-given Liberty
Liberty is bestowed by God, not granted by government, and is preserved by living within His truth. Lasting freedom is found in obedience to God rather than the pursuit of unrestricted self-rule.
3. Jonathan Mayhew – Righteous Resistance to Tyranny
Civil government is ordained by God, but remains subject to His authority. When human authority opposes God’s commands, believers are called to remain faithful to the Lord above all else.
4. John Witherspoon – Divine Providence
God sovereignly rules over the affairs of individuals and nations, directing history according to His purposes. Confidence belongs not in governments or human strength, but in the providential care and faithfulness of God.
