The Evil Tongue
James 3:1-18 | Mark 14 | Pastor Winston Parrish
The tongue is presented as one of the clearest indicators of the heart’s spiritual condition. Our words may leave our mouths in seconds, but they can remain in another person’s heart for a lifetime. Like a bit directing a horse, a helm steering a ship, or a spark igniting a forest, the tongue possesses tremendous power to shape lives, families, churches, and relationships. Faith that has truly changed the heart will eventually change the mouth, because our speech reveals what is ruling within us.
The answer is not merely better manners, stronger determination, or greater self-control. No person can tame the tongue apart from the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ, whose words were always pure, died for people whose mouths have been corrupted by sin. He can forgive us, cleanse our hearts, and transform tongues once used for destruction into instruments of truth, grace, healing, and praise. Genuine repentance takes responsibility, makes wrongs right, and asks God to govern our words for His glory.
1. The Tongue Sets the Course
Like a bit or a helm, the tongue may be small, but it directs the course of our lives and relationships. The words we speak today help create the world in which we and those around us will live tomorrow.
2. The Tongue Starts the Fire
A single cruel sentence, repeated secret, false accusation, or piece of gossip can spread destruction far beyond its intended target. Because sinful speech burns and poisons, we must bring our tongues under the control of the Holy Spirit.
3. The Tongue Shows the Source
The mouth does not create the corruption of the heart; it reveals it. Our words expose whether bitterness, pride, and strife are ruling within us or whether our hearts are being governed by the pure, gentle, merciful wisdom that comes from above.
