The Child Who Was God

Week 5 | Luke 2:39-52 | Pastor Winston Parrish

Luke’s account of Jesus’ early years reveals not only His true humanity but also His full divine identity. After the dangers of infancy pass, Scripture turns its attention to the quiet, unseen years of growth in Nazareth—years marked by obedience, wisdom, and favor with God and man. Jesus grows as a child under the care of faithful parents, fully participating in human development while never ceasing to be God. These ordinary years affirm that the incarnation involved real submission, learning, and obedience, all unfolding according to the Father’s design.

At twelve years old, Scripture records the sole preserved moment from the first three decades of Jesus’ life, revealing His conscious awareness of His identity and mission. In the temple, Jesus demonstrates unmatched understanding of God’s truth and declares His divine sonship with unmistakable clarity: He must be about His Father’s business. Yet this divine self-awareness does not lead to rebellion but to humble submission, as He returns to Nazareth in obedience to His earthly parents. The passage confirms that Jesus did not become God later in life—He was God from the beginning, fully aware of who He was and why He had come.

1. The Faithful Home God Ordained — Luke 2:39-42
—Where He Lived and How He Was Led
Jesus was raised in a home shaped by obedience, worship, and reverence for God’s Word, where faithfulness prepared Him for the mission ahead. His growth reflects the union of divine purpose and ordinary means.

2. The Father’s House That Drew Him — Luke 2:43-47
—What He Loved and What He Sought
Even as a child, Jesus was drawn to the presence and truth of His Father, delighting in God’s Word and demonstrating wisdom that surpassed human understanding. The temple was not a place of obligation but of belonging.

3. The Father’s Business That Defined Him — Luke 2:48-52
—He Knew Himself and Why He Came
Jesus openly declared His divine sonship and mission at twelve years old, revealing full awareness of His purpose while remaining submissive and obedient. His life was governed by the will of the Father, long before His public ministry began.
