Emmanuel, God With Us
Week 1 | Luke 2:1-14 | Galatians 4:3-7 | Pastor Winston Parrish
The birth of Jesus Christ is presented not as a sentimental moment, but as a divine intervention into humanity’s deepest problem. Scripture reveals that mankind is not merely confused about God, but enslaved by sin, bound under the curse introduced through Adam’s fall. From Genesis onward, humanity stands condemned under the law, incapable of rescuing itself through morality, religion, or human effort. The manger scene in Luke 2 only gains its full meaning when understood against this backdrop of bondage, corruption, and separation from God.
In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son—preexistent, eternal, and divine—to accomplish what humanity could not. Jesus entered the world as Emmanuel, God with us, fully human yet without sin, living in perfect obedience under the law. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He redeemed those held in bondage and transformed enemies into adopted sons and heirs. The incarnation reveals not a reactive God, but a sovereign Redeemer executing an eternal plan of salvation, bringing sinners out of bondage and into restored relationship with Himself.
1. Man is Not Lost in Confusion, He is Held in Bondage
Scripture teaches that humanity is enslaved by sin through Adam’s fall, rendering all human religion and effort powerless to bring salvation or righteousness.
2. God Did Not React to Man’s Fall, He Revealed His Plan
The incarnation was not a response to human failure, but the unfolding of God’s eternal purpose, promised from the beginning and fulfilled at the appointed time.
3. Salvation Required God to Become Man & Man to be Redeemed
Jesus entered the world as both fully God and fully man to live in perfect obedience, bear sin in the place of the guilty, and secure redemption and adoption for those who believe.
