A Good Soldier

II Timothy 2 & 3 | Pastor Winston Parrish

In his final letter, written from a Roman prison, Paul charges Timothy to endure as a faithful soldier of Jesus Christ. Though his own race was nearly finished, Paul urges Timothy to remain strong in the midst of a collapsing world marked by godlessness, deception, and persecution. Strength, Paul reminds him, is not found in personality, politics, or popularity, but only in the grace of Christ. Timothy would need both supply from God’s grace and the weapon of God’s truth to face the battles ahead.

Paul then lays out the marks of a good soldier: strengthened by grace, anchored in truth, separated for service, and faithful to proclaim God’s Word. The task is urgent, for perilous times are already here, with culture decaying, families unraveling, and pulpits drifting from sound doctrine. Yet the Word of God remains alive and unshakable, and the call to every believer is to endure hardship, live holy, and boldly carry the gospel until the Commander calls us home.

1. Strength in Grace
A good soldier does not depend on personal willpower, politics, or popularity, but draws daily strength from the inexhaustible grace of Christ that sustains and carries us through the battle.

2. Steadfast in Truth
In a world full of lies and shifting opinions, the Word of God is our unshakable foundation and sharp weapon, steadying us in the storm and equipping us to stand firm against deception.

3. Separation for Service
A good soldier must live clean and holy, personally choosing to turn from sin and compromise so that they can be a vessel set apart, ready and usable for the Master’s work.

4. The Final Charge
Regardless of cost, convenience, or culture, believers are commanded to boldly preach and live the Word in every season, holding fast to truth until the Commander calls us home.
