A Glimpse of Glory
Week 11 | Mark 9:2-8 | Pastor Winston Parrish
As Jesus moves toward the final phase of His earthly ministry, the Transfiguration provides a crucial revelation of His true identity. Just days after Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, the disciples struggle to reconcile the promise of the Messiah with Jesus’ prediction of suffering and death. In response, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain where, for a brief moment, the veil of His humanity is lifted and His divine glory shines through. This is not merely a display of supernatural power, but a merciful revelation designed to strengthen the disciples before the coming trials of the cross.
On the mountain, the testimony of Moses and Elijah affirms that Christ’s suffering fulfills the entire witness of the Law and the Prophets, while the voice of the Father declares Jesus as His beloved Son and commands that He be heard. The moment concludes with the disciples seeing “Jesus only,” emphasizing that Christ alone stands at the center of God’s redemptive plan. The Transfiguration offers a glimpse of the glory that belongs to Christ and reminds believers that suffering is not the end of the story; the path of the kingdom leads through the cross to the certainty of coming glory.
1. The Veil of Humanity — Mark 9:2-3
For most of His earthly ministry, Christ’s divine glory was veiled beneath ordinary human appearance, yet on the mountain the hidden majesty of the Son of God was briefly revealed.
2. The Witnesses of History — Mark 9:4
The appearance of Moses and Elijah represents the Law and the Prophets, affirming that the suffering and mission of Christ fulfill the testimony of Scripture.
3. The Voice of the Father — Mark 9:7
From the cloud of divine presence, the Father declares Jesus to be His beloved Son and commands the disciples to listen to Him above all others.
4. The Vision of Glory — Mark 9:8
When the moment ends and only Jesus remains, the disciples are left with a glimpse of glory that prepares them to endure the suffering that lies ahead.
