The Battle Within #6:
Peter, Part 2
A Biblical Answer to Anxiety, Panic, and Depression
Mark 14:66-72 | Pastor Winston Parrish
Two weeks ago, in Part 1 of Peter’s story, we saw the conflict between belonging to a holy God and continuing to battle unholy flesh. Peter genuinely loved Christ, but he trusted his own courage and commitment. When pressure came, the disciple who promised to die with Jesus denied three times that he knew Him.
In Part 2, we followed Peter beyond his failure to his restoration. After the resurrection, Jesus asked him three times, “Lovest thou me?” Christ was not humiliating Peter or making him pay for his denials. He was confronting his failure, restoring him to fellowship, and calling him forward. Jesus knew Peter’s sin, repentance, and love—and still entrusted him with the care of His sheep. The man who denied Christ still had purpose and a place of service in God’s work.
Peter later taught believers to hope in grace, live as obedient children, and cast every care upon Christ. He no longer pointed people toward confidence in themselves, but toward dependence upon the Savior who keeps His own. Grace did not excuse Peter’s sin; it forgave, restored, and changed him.
1. The Flesh Failed Him
2. The Savior Held Him
3. Grace Restored Him
Jesus confronted Peter’s sin without casting him away. He restored Peter to fellowship, recommissioned him to feed His sheep, and transformed a self-confident disciple into a humble shepherd. That same grace calls us to stop pretending, confess our sin, receive correction, cast our cares upon Christ, and move forward in obedient dependence upon Him.
The flesh Peter trusted failed him. The Savior Peter failed never forsook him. Peter’s story reminds us that our worst failure is never greater than Christ’s power to forgive, restore, and use us again.
