The Battle Within #1:
John the Baptist
A Biblical Answer to Anxiety, Panic, and Depression
Matthew 11:1-11 | Pastor Winston Parrish
In Matthew 11:1-11, John the Baptist finds himself in a dark and confusing place. Though he had faithfully proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God, imprisonment brought his faith and circumstances into painful collision. John’s question—“Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?”—was not the cry of an unbeliever, but of a faithful servant struggling to understand what God was allowing. His story reminds us that devoted believers can experience anxiety, fear, disappointment, and depression without losing their relationship with Christ.
Jesus did not condemn John’s questions or give him a full explanation. Instead, He directed John back to the truth of Scripture and affirmed that his life was still fulfilling God’s purpose. John’s prison door never opened, but his circumstances did not mean that God had failed. When we cannot understand God’s hand, we can look to Calvary and remember His heart. Our darkest season must never become our source of truth: circumstances change, emotions speak, and pain distorts—but Jesus Christ remains the same.
1. Prison Doesn’t Cancel Purpose
A dark season does not erase our identity, calling, or place in God’s plan. Our circumstances may change, but no prison can rewrite what God has spoken.
2. Questions Don’t Cancel Truth
God may not explain everything He allows, but He has clearly revealed who He is. Faith rests in God’s unchanging character and promises, even when His plan unfolds differently than we expected.
3. Pain Can’t See the Whole Plan
Pain makes the present feel permanent and darkness feel final, but neither can see the completed work of God. Victory is not measured by comfortable circumstances, but by a life of faithful obedience to Christ.
