—An Update from La Guaira, Venezuela
Today I walked through devastation that is difficult to put into words.
La Guaira looks like a war zone. Entire apartment buildings have collapsed. Homes are gone. Streets are filled with concrete, twisted steel, and the remains of people’s lives. The scale of destruction is unlike anything most of us can imagine. Mile after mile of destruction.
Today I spent time with first responders who are still engaged in active body recovery operations. One responder paused while surveying the remains of a collapsed residential building.
“We are still finding people. Today it’s just pieces of people. A finger from a 10-year-old girl that we know is missing. Beside her we found her mother’s leg,” he said quietly.
This is just one of thousands of stories.
Mile after mile of poorly built homes have become the family tombs of many of Venezuela’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. Entire neighborhoods have been crushed beneath concrete and debris. Families are waiting for news. Others are burying loved ones. Many still have no idea what tomorrow will look like.
Death is everywhere.
The first responders are exhausted. The pastors are tired. The people are grieving. Families have lost loved ones, homes, businesses, and in many cases everything they owned. Entire communities are trying to process tragedy while simply figuring out how to survive another day.
Today I met with first responders, humanitarian partners, and pastors representing multiple churches throughout the affected area. We visited damaged neighborhoods, reviewed urgent needs, and began coordinating what must become a long-term relief effort.
What has encouraged me most is the faithfulness of the churches.
Many of these pastors are carrying their own burdens and losses, yet they continue serving others. Churches are distributing food, caring for families, encouraging the hurting, and sharing the hope of Christ in the middle of unimaginable circumstances.
Back in the United States, hundreds of thousands of pounds of disaster-relief supplies are waiting to come to Venezuela. Food, baby supplies, hygiene products, medical supplies, cleaning materials, and emergency relief resources have already been assembled and are ready to move.
At present, approximately 300 metric tons—more than 620,000 pounds of aid—are available for deployment in the United States and Peru.
The challenge is not gathering supplies.
The challenge is moving them.
Our work right now is focused on securing the funding and transportation necessary to bring this aid into Venezuela through cargo aircraft and maritime shipping.
Throughout the day I met with pastors, relief partners, and contacts connected to both business and government sectors to identify the fastest and most effective ways to move these resources where they are needed most.
The need is here.
The supplies are waiting.
Now we are praying for God to provide the means to connect the two.
Please pray for the people of Venezuela. Pray for the families who are mourning. Pray for the first responders who continue doing work no one should ever have to do. Pray for the pastors and churches standing in the gap. Pray for wisdom as we coordinate future relief efforts and seek the resources necessary to move these supplies.
Today I stood where death has been busy.
But I was reminded once again that death does not have the final word.
“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” — John 11:25
