Emmanuel, The Word
Week 2 | John 1:1-14 | Pastor Winston Parrish
The incarnation of Jesus Christ reveals not merely the birth of a child, but the arrival of the eternal Word of God into human history. John’s Gospel looks beyond the manger to eternity past, declaring that the Word existed before creation, was distinct in person yet fully divine, and entered time without beginning. Christmas is therefore not sentimental tradition but divine revelation—God speaking clearly, personally, and decisively through His Son. The baby born in Bethlehem is the self-expression of God, possessing all divine attributes and rightful authority over creation.
Through the Word, all things were made, and in Him is life that shines as light in the darkness—a light the darkness cannot overcome. This same Word drew near, taking on flesh and dwelling among humanity, revealing the glory of God full of grace and truth. Though many rejected Him, those who received Him were granted the right to become children of God—not by human effort, heritage, or will, but by divine grace. The incarnation demands a response: Christ is not to be admired from a distance, but received in faith and worshiped as Lord.
1. The Word Was Eternal Before He Was Born
Jesus Christ did not begin at Bethlehem; He existed eternally as God, distinct in person yet equal in nature, entering time without surrendering His divinity.
2. The Word Created Life and Shattered Darkness
All creation exists through Christ, and the life found in Him is the light that exposes sin, reveals truth, and overcomes every form of darkness.
3. The Word Came Near and Called Us Home
By taking on flesh, Christ brought God’s presence among humanity, offering salvation and adoption to all who receive Him by faith.
